A cloth face mask, also called a nasal mask, is a specialized mask utilized to reduce or masks the symptoms of respiratory illnesses in people with breathing problems. A cloth face mask typically consists of a waterproof layer of cloth, typically cotton, that’s worn above the nose and mouth. Because face masks can’t be reused, they’re usually used on the outside of the body to control cold or flu symptoms, though some people use them to moisturize their skin. Face masks may also be used for skin tightening. For example, some people use a face mask to tighten loose skin folds on their face.
The face masks wearers wear do help to prevent the spread of the virus, but they do little to combat the virus itself. In fact, the only way to stop the spread of a virus is to get rid of the droplets of virus that make it move from one person to the next. These droplets, once transmitted, remain in the air. If a person with the disease enters an affected area, these virus-dwelling droplets can spread the disease to them through airborne contact. This is why face masks can’t stop all transmission of the disease.
The droplets of virus that make it move from one person to another come into contact with the surface tissues on which they land, on the lips, chin, eyes, and nose, or any other part of the body where they are warmed or moistened by the sweat of the person wearing the face masks. As the droplets touch these body surfaces, the viruses send the viruses and their protein shells into the air. This is how the disease spreads. If the surfaces on which the droplets land are uncoated, they will not allow the viruses to move from the user but will not prevent the transfer of the disease from the user to another person.
The wearer of the surgical mask must breathe through a special valve, called the intraluminal port, placed at the top of the mask. This port gives only a limited amount of air into the mask, preventing the spread of all disease-causing particles. It must be worn tightly enough that the pressure inside it, which is about 1 bar (measured at the mask’s side-blown flaps), cannot escape. If the pressure inside the valve is not kept at its maximum, then it cannot hold the constant airflow needed to prevent the spread of infection.
Surgeons wear surgical masks that are different from the cloth face masks that are worn by health care workers. These face masks provide more resistance against airflow and provide protection against particulates that would otherwise compromise the efficiency of the surgical procedure. These particular surgical masks have been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration. They are available in standard sizes and in custom fitments.
Some manufacturers have developed disposable face masks that are useful for use during washing. They are designed so that when they are used during the process of autoclave washing, the wearer can close his or her eyes and breathe comfortably. The disposable n95 respirators are made from nylongestant, a foaming agent used in antiseptic mouth washes to prevent bad breath and mouth ulcers. They are useful for patients who need to change their medical ID bracelet because it often is unable to read medical signs.
