A surgical face mask, also called a sterile medical face mask, is designed to be worn by medical practitioners during medical procedures in order to avoid airborne transmission of infections from the patient to the medical staff. The mask has a small mouthpiece attached to it through an adhesive line that can also be used to seal the mouth shut in case of an emergency. This type of surgical mask is used for all sorts of medical procedures involving the nose, eyes, ears and mouth. These include procedures such as sinus surgery, ear and nose surgery, cancer surgery, rhinoplasty, dermabrasion and acne surgery.
During procedures where there are patients with breathing difficulties or those with large blemishes on the face, they may need to wear masks designed for this purpose during their surgical procedure. These include the “EO-Pro” series, which are made up of plastic face masks and ear loops with Velcro closure. The closures are functional but are designed to keep the mask in place so that there are no problems with leakage. This type of face mask also includes a snap-on chin strap that can be adjusted to fit patients of all sizes.
The transmission of the causative agent, or pathogen, from one patient to another is an issue that has been gaining importance as of late. One method of preventing this is through using face masks that help prevent the spread of this bacterium or virus. Recently, a study was conducted in order to determine if this was indeed the case. The results showed that when pathogenic organisms were exposed to the endometrial fluid found within the cervix, it was possible for transmission of the pathogen to occur. In the previous study, this transmission was determined to occur approximately 90% of the time; however, the latest study showed that approximately four out of every five contacts with a patient who had a previous history of endometriosis were not associated with any complications.
Although most people believe that these types of face masks are only needed during the initial surgical procedure, but new studies have shown that the same type of mask could also help prevent the recurrence of complications during the post-operative period. In fact, the use of a liquid droplets type of surgical mask has been shown to help reduce the incidence of the common side effects associated with surgical site infections. Although the number of complications associated with this procedure has been on the decline over the past few years, the increased use of a surgical mask as well as the use of liquid droplets could help to lower the occurrence of infection as well as the need for antibiotics.
Another benefit provided by a face mask during the surgical procedure is that it can be used to control the volume of air that is inhaled by the patient. During an abdominoplasty, a patient may experience both vomiting and sneezing. The volume of air that is inhaled by the patient can cause both of these symptoms to increase in severity. This increase in symptoms can be very disruptive to a patient’s lifestyle. By using a surgical mask that contains small particles that create a tighter seal around the nose, the risk of experiencing either vomiting or sneezing is reduced.
A surgical face mask can be worn either over one eye or over each eye. However, the most common use of this device is to cover the nose, thus decreasing the visibility of the upper and lower eyelids, which can make the wearer more uncomfortable while wearing this device. Most devices that are used in the United States today either contain one tiny plastic piece or multiple pieces that are worn in a particular order to create a tighter seal around the nose, thereby reducing the visibility of either the upper or lower eyelid and possibly the mouth.
