A surgical face mask, also called a dental face mask, is designed to be worn daily by health care workers during surgery. Surgical masks designed for use by nurses and other medical professionals contain special features that help prevent contamination of the nasal cavity. Surgeons often wear face masks during open-heart surgery to keep the airways open and infection-free. Dental face masks, meanwhile, are designed to prevent infections by capturing airborne bacteria and liquid droplets released from the patient’s mouth and nose and preventing them from entering the respiratory system. Face masks are also used during burn treatments in hospitals.
Most face masks contain specially formulated solutions that prevent contamination of the wearer’s nasal cavities, but some surgeons prefer to wear disposable face masks, which allow them to clean the nasal cavity while they perform their surgical procedures. Dental face masks, meanwhile, usually have a vinyl coating over a plastic mesh interior that collects collected respiratory droplets. The interior is then sealed back to keep the liquid from escaping. Many dental face masks come with special snap-on gaskets that allow users to pull the mask off cleanly after each use.
Aside from preventing the spread of infection, these disposable face masks also make it easier to wash and disinfect. All that is needed is a few minutes of washing with soap and water. Face cloth masks, on the other hand, require disinfecting by wiping the fabric with rubbing alcohol or with a disinfecting solution. This process, however, needs to be repeated several times to remove all traces of disinfection solution. Washing face cloth masks with soap and water is inconvenient and time-consuming, which is why most doctors and nurses prefer to use disposable plastic face masks instead.
Face coverings are another popular choice for sterilization, as they are not only easy to use but are also convenient to carry. Available in different sizes and materials, these masks can either be made of plastic or cloth. Plastic ones are more convenient to use and can be easily switched out with other types of masks, especially when the hospital or medical facility is changing its sterilization procedures. Cloth masks, on the other hand, require no cleaning and can be kept clean for several days. However, they are not as comfortable as their plastic counterparts as the feel of a cloth face mask is not the same as that of a plastic one.
Another advantage offered by these accessories is that they allow easier breathing while masking the nose. Since most people wear masks to conceal their identity, wearing a nose protector is often compulsory. A nose protector, in turn, functions much like a brow brush that prevents particles from entering the nasal passage. For this reason, it is usually worn over a traditional nose stud.
A final advantage of using such face masks is that they are made with natural ingredients. This makes them suitable for all skin types. They do not contain harmful chemicals and are devoid of any synthetic ingredients, making them safe to use even for sensitive skin types. The natural ingredients that come in contact with the face include Aloe Vera, Burdock, Peppermint and Chamomile extracts. These ingredients work in conjunction with each other in order to offer maximum benefits.
