Disadvantages of Face Masks

A medical face mask is typically designed to be worn only by health practitioners while administering certain medical procedures. These devices are designed to protect the face from inhaling and swallowing fluids. The most common uses for these masks are for cleaning the airway and for protecting the nasal passages. They can be used to treat respiratory disorders such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchial pneumonia. They also may be used to reduce symptoms of colds and flu, and to protect the skin from burns caused by household chemicals.

In fact, a surgical face mask is specifically designed to be used during surgical procedures in order to avoid infection in patients. Surgical masks provide protection from splashing of blood and from the inhalation of droplets and liquid droppings from the mouth and nose of the wearer. It may also be used to clean the surgical field, especially if it contains an antiseptic agent to keep the site clean and free of bacteria.

A surgical face mask also provides protection from the airborne contamination of surgical equipment that can cause infections during procedures. When the surgical field is contaminated with particles that can irritate the patient’s eyes and respiratory tract, patients can develop eye irritation or other symptoms, which can lead to vision loss or difficulty breathing. Infections can also occur in the nose or throat. Therefore, patients should not be exposed to these particles, and medical personnel who administer these medications should wear medical face masks to protect themselves and others during these procedures.

Surgical masks are usually made of sterile materials to minimize the spread of bacteria. Some surgical masks, however, contain non-sterile material such as gauze or synthetic fabrics. This non-sterile material should not be directly placed on the skin, but should be covered by the surgical mask. Infection can spread through this material and to the patient if the surgical area is not cleaned properly.

Inhalation of nasal drops or aerosol mist of a surgical type face mask can cause irritation of the skin and eyes of a patient, resulting in inflammation and redness of the patient’s face. A doctor can use cotton swabs dipped into a solution of saline solution, which can reduce and eliminate such irritation and swelling. Another alternative to use when a patient is allergic to nasal drops or aerosol mist is to make a paste out of baking soda and oatmeal, or similar products. The paste can be placed over the surgical area after application of a surgical mask to minimize irritation.

Face masks have numerous advantages over the use of face washes, sprays and other products. These devices allow a healthcare provider to maintain a sterile working environment for the patients while treating patients. They allow for easy and effective cleaning of surgical and other environments and protect the face from contamination during surgical procedures.
