Face Coverings – A Guide for Health Professionals

A face mask is an adhesive vinyl face mask, generally made from common fabric, such as cotton, worn on the face and nose to cover breathing through a tube. While many cloth face masks are impossible to adjust, some can be adjusted by rolling the face mask in or out. Some cloth masks have a lip that can be pulled up higher to block chapped lips, or to pull the eye mask up higher for increased vision. The cloth used in face masks has to be completely clean and washed before each use. This is to prevent bacteria from breeding on the surface.

Wearing a nose mask A nose ring, also known as a nasal splint, is a band of elastic material that fits around the tip of the nose. These devices are often used to prevent the development of polyps or nodules in the nose, which can cause pain and inflammation. While wearing these devices can be uncomfortable, wearing one on the job may be a hazard, since they cannot be taken off easily and require a lot of dexterity to put on and take off.

Soft Fabric Face Masks Many of the disposable face masks made for the workplace contain polypropylene fibers that are woven into soft fabric like spandex. These masks are comfortable to wear and easy to remove, but soft fabric masks are also more absorbent than the type used in hospitals. They do not provide as much protection as rigid fiber cloth masks. These are only available in standard sizes to fit most facial sizes.

Wearing Homemade Mask Many people make home face masks to use at home. There are some basic safety guidelines to follow when making these masks, especially when they are worn outside. These masks should never be used when breathing air directly or when working in a fire, since these are made of flammable ingredients.

How Can Face Masking Help Prevent Health Problems? One of the best ways that face masks help prevent illness is because they reduce or stop the spread of either airborne pathogens such as the flu or a common cold, or chemicals that can irritate the skin, such as irritants or cleaners. For example, many kinds of detergents can cause allergic reactions. When using a detergent-cleaning pad, washing your hands before you use it and before you leave the house is essential. Using an alcohol or chlorine-based hand sanitizer is also a good idea.

The National Institutes of Health has found that a simple face mask can cut the number of hospital admissions caused by irritants or spreading of bacteria or viruses by almost half. The NIEHS says that the masks can also help prevent the transmission of virus-causing germs through direct contact. Since the majority of medical professionals recommend using disposable hand gloves when handling contaminated fluids such as intravenous fluids or blood, face coverings are recommended as well. While there have been a lot of studies done on the efficacy of these masks in reducing the spread of diseases, more research is needed to determine how effective they really are at prevention.
