A medical mask, also called an epi-mask, is usually worn by doctors during medical procedures. It is specifically designed to reduce the risks of infection by capturing airborne bacteria and shedding in liquid drops and aerosols released into the patient’s nostrils and mouth.
The mask is made from various materials, but its most common is silicone, as it is a highly durable medical device. It comes in a variety of sizes and shapes, including round, rectangular and oval. Most medical users find that they can wear their mask for up to three hours without having to remove it to clean it, as it is made of special materials that do not allow bacteria to build up on the material.
While most face masks are made of silicone, other materials can be used as well. In general, face masks should not contain hairspray or other irritants to avoid allergic reactions. Some materials are suitable for disinfection, but some are not suitable for this purpose. Also, a plastic or glass face mask should be avoided, as it could easily break, allowing an entry of germs and bacteria into the patient’s mouth and throat.
A medical mask must have a ventilation system that allows the air to flow through it properly. The ventilation system is typically provided by a tube, but may also include holes for tubing, or a mask will have a removable cover that can be opened and closed. An important factor to consider when choosing a mask is the area where the mask will be placed. Since an airtight face mask needs to be placed on top of the patient, the most appropriate spot may be the back of the head. In order for a mask to be useful and effective, it should also have enough room to move around. It should also provide a smooth seal, especially if it is an adhesive mask.
A medical mask should always be cleaned before and after use. It should be washed with a solution made from diluted bleach, water and mild soap, and then rinsed with cool water. The mask should be dry before use, especially when wet. Some of these solutions can leave streaks on the skin that may make the face mask slippery or uncomfortable. Also, if a medical mask is not used correctly, it can trap moisture underneath it that can cause skin irritation.
Facial Hygiene is very important. Patients who suffer from chronic sinus infections and those who breathe through their mouths should take extra care when wearing a mask to avoid infections from forming around the mask.
