Homemade Face Masks – Do They Reduce the Effects of an Ailment?

A face mask is essentially a thin cloth mask worn around the nose and mouth, typically made of cotton, ideally, with elastic or Velcro fasteners. When wearing a face mask it is important to keep your chin up and your mouth closed. This keeps the mask from rubbing your skin, as it will most likely cause irritation. Clients with certain facial disorders should not use face masks. This article briefly goes over what a face mask can do for you and how it can help improve your skin appearance.

The primary purpose of a face mask is to prevent moisture loss from your skin. Since face masks can be made from several different materials, it is important to know the specific purpose of your face mask before ordering one. Some types of face masks work by constricting or blocking the air passages through which sweat and oil can escape, while others work by encapsulating the skin and directing it away from the source of moisture. While highly effective, both kinds of mask can have some drawbacks.

The traditional facial mask used to prevent sweat from leaving the skin is composed of thick cotton. Cotton can trap perspiration even on its most gentle surface, resulting in pilling. For this reason, some people have trouble breathing while wearing face masks made of thick cotton. As well as being uncomfortable, face masks made with too thick of a material can also be difficult to remove, leading to skin irritation if it becomes too difficult to get to the source of moisture. Many times cotton masks can also be very sticky, making it difficult to evenly distribute the oil and dirt that collects on the skin surface.

Another common problem linked with face masks is that they can interfere with mucus drainage, especially in cases where your nasal cavities are blocked. This can lead to difficulty breathing, sneezing and other common respiratory problems once the cold or flu bug has set up residence in your system. If you’re susceptible to colds or the flu, then using an anti-colds face mask when you’re outside in the sunshine could help you avoid the problems associated with prolonged exposure to these irritants. In fact, some researchers have even suggested that the use of these products could reduce the risk of developing some forms of cancer linked to exposure to the elements.

However, using homemade face masks isn’t without its disadvantages. One of the biggest concerns involved with the preparation of fabric masks is bacterial contamination. Because there is no other way for bacteria to leave the skin than to make its way onto the surface, using household products such as fabric softeners and/or bleaches could have a negative impact on your health. While some research has indicated that household fabric softeners may not actually increase the risk of illness, there are also reports of people suffering allergic reactions to the products used.

While facial abrasive scrubs do provide some of the benefits of an effective face mask, they may not be the best option for people with severe acne issues. An easy solution to this problem is to purchase an antibacterial face mask, which can help to eliminate the bacteria that cause acne breakouts. These products can be found in many health food stores and often work very well in helping to treat mild to moderate cases of acne. Still, it’s important to remember that no face masks help with acne prevention. Acne prevention comes from a healthier diet, plenty of water, regular exercise and reducing the toxins that enter our bodies through the air we breathe.
