How to Wash Your Medical Face Mask

A facial mask, also known as a facemask, is a thick, closed-over cloth mask worn around the nose and mouth, designed to cover the eyes and mouth. When effective, facemasks are impossible to remove, since physical distancing from one another is impossible. Facemasks can be made of many different fabrics, including cotton, which makes them very comfortable and easy to wear. While cotton facemasks are typically used during the cold seasons, more durable plastic facemasks are sometimes used throughout the year.

Facemasks can come in several varieties, depending on their use. The most common type of face mask is the cloth or plastic variety, commonly made out of durable nylon fabric. However, a face mask can also be made from other materials such as vinyl, which are a light weight fabric, and even leather, which is sturdier and sometimes used in high end professional settings. While PVC and leather facemasks are the most common types, others may be found made from a wide range of materials.

Aside from the different materials used to make a face mask, there are a few other things to keep in mind when using face masks. The main consideration is the environment in which the mask will be used, because some environments are more susceptible to bacteria than others. For example, people who frequently exercise and have sweaty hair are much more likely to be affected by bacteria in gym mats than in a more dust-free work environment. Therefore, using face masks in gym mats and other sweaty environments is strongly recommended.

The size of the face mask should also be taken into consideration. If it is used by someone who cannot remove it on their own, then they will need extra support when wiping it off. Since surgical masks can cost thousands of dollars, they are usually only worn during specific medical procedures or for special events, such as skin grafts or open-heart surgeries. Surgeons typically only wear surgical masks for a handful of hours every day, so they do not need to worry about removing it on a regular basis. Therefore, face masks should only be worn by those who are in relatively good health and rarely wear the mask more than is necessary.

Washing a face mask without soap or water is highly recommended. This is because using soap or water to wash a mask without these cleansers can result in the mask becoming grimy from the residue left behind after using soap or water. A face mask should be washed with clean water at least 20 seconds before being used. If a mask becomes grimy after being washed, it is best to wash it again to remove the remaining grime before applying it to the skin.

After washing the face mask, the surgeon will most likely use a face mask disinfectant to complete the job. Most available face mask disinfectants come with instructions on how to use them, which can be followed carefully and left to dry on a cDC for a minimum of five minutes before being applied. The ABCDE guidelines published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons are very helpful when finding the perfect face mask disinfectant. Choosing the right one can help ensure that your cDC is always ready to go, and can also help reduce the risk of a breakout or other skin problems.
