Face masks have been used for centuries. The face mask was used as part of the religious process, it symbolized the journey of the spirit, the face in the form of a mask symbolizes the face before death. The face mask has also been used to help heal the spirit, and the face was an important part of cleansing rituals. There is a common misconception that face masks are used solely for protection or spiritual purposes, they are also used as a way of healing.
A face mask is typically a fabric mask worn over either the nose and/or the mouth, usually made of common cloth material, typically cotton. When practical face masks aren’t available, and if physical distancing isn’t possible, cloth face masks can still be worn without washing. They can be made very easily by hand, by using a sewing machine, or by using face masks made from natural fibers like wool, hemp, or cotton. A few stitches and some thread and a bit of elbow grease is all you need.
To make the cloth face masks, start by creating the layers. The base layer can be any of the following: cotton, hemp, wool, sisal, jute, corn fiber, rayon, silk, or polyester fibers. The topmost layer should be a mixture of natural fibers with synthetic materials. Cloth layers can be made using any combination of these materials and other particles. The main idea here is to create the layers that cover your entire face. Any air pockets between the individual layers can be filled with breathable air, but be aware of breathing problems caused by cold or humidity when using breathable materials, a humidifier can help add moisture to a room.
Sewing the face mask usually only needs a straight-stitch needle and thread, although occasionally a surgeon may need to use a pin or other specialized sewing device. A plastic piece or “skull” (end portion) needs to be removed first to allow the cloth or other layer to be sewn together. Once the skin is removed, any adhesives used to hold the pieces in place will need to be removed and any overlapping of the pieces will need to be stitched again. The plastic skin should now be ready for sewing.
Once the face masks have been made, the uppermost layers need to be sewed. Start by stitching the sides and back together to form an open area. Add one more layer of fabric or a piece of another material over the top layer so that it is fully covered. A face mask can be constructed with several layers, but only two layers of fabric are usually required. Each additional layer can be sewn on as needed, just as long as they are properly sewn and come in similar color schemes.
Another very popular method of covering the nose is nasal cushions that are worn at the front of the head. These cushions are similar to facial pillows and are available in several sizes and colors. These are much easier to wear than face masks, since the nose cushions can be taken off and put on at any time. However, nasal cushions are not nearly as effective, since it is difficult to keep them in place.
