Is Face Masking a Good Method For Effective Respiratory Infection Prevention?

A face mask is usually a plastic mask designed of common materials, most commonly cotton, usually mixed with epoxy resin, that cover the nose and mouth. Although the concept of face masks goes back at least to the ancient civilizations, they were certainly popular in the twentieth century and are still popular in some countries today. These types of face masks can keep someone who is working inside a sealed room from breathing in any sort of contaminants in the air, which can be hazardous to one’s health.

However, one must be careful when using such masks as they should be worn with care under certain circumstances. One of the more severe disadvantages of using the disposable kind of face mask (like the N95 respirators) is the amount of moisture that can get into the nose, causing one to experience a runny nose or worse. In addition, since the skin is sealed, any bacteria or allergens that may enter the nostrils cannot escape out of the nose. Since people will be breathing in this steam when they wear these masks, they will likely experience some sort of irritation or discomfort when trying to exhale.

Using face masks help prevent this from happening as they help to seal off the nose. Also, since they are only used during the outside of the workday, you will not typically see workers wearing them inside of the workplace. They are primarily worn outside of the home or other potentially infected areas, such as clinics and doctor’s offices. This allows people to get the benefit of the protection afforded by the devices without having to worry about wearing them inside.

The next potential problem comes from, what it can cause when the patient wearing the face mask comes into contact with someone who has the same virus. If the patient is not wearing a respirator (which he/she should be if the individual is at risk for developing serious diseases like the ones that are caused by the coronavirus), the virus will enter the body through the nose and enter the blood stream. Once inside, it will continue to spread. Therefore, by wearing a face mask, you may actually be spreading the disease!

Fortunately, many of these infections can be treated with antibiotics. However, simply keeping your eyes open and clean on a daily basis is still the best way to prevent them. Remember to always clean your hands before touching any surfaces that have been in contact with the patient or their caregivers, as well as keep the hands of others clean and dry. In addition, remember to wash your face masks if you use them regularly. Finally, make sure that you use an effective respiratory infection prevention product on your face masks. If you do not, you could be spreading the disease, making it more difficult to fight against.
