A facial mask is a thin transparent mask, usually of common cloth materials, worn around the nose and mouth. Facial masks, although used primarily for cosmetic purposes, have several important purposes. Many people wear facial masks to shield their mouth from the effects of strong sunlight, as well as from smoke or other odors. In some cases, a mask can also be worn to reduce wrinkles and creases, and to tighten skin tone.
Face masks are available in a wide range of fabrics and appearance, designed for both cosmetic and therapeutic use. Although face masks may be applied by professionals, most people prefer to apply them themselves, following instructions for use on the packaging. Manual face masks may be used on moist skin and may help to alleviate redness and tightness around the eyes. When physically impossible, and if more efficient masks aren’t available, manual face masks may also be worn to soften wrinkled and full lips, to hide blemishes, or to tighten loose skin.
Common fabrics used in face masks include cotton, gauze, jelly dough and sponges. Cotton can absorb excessive moisture, but may leave behind a greasy film. Gauze can be very drying for sensitive skin, but some brands of face masks contain moisturizing ingredients such as grape seed oil or hazelnut oil, which give a natural, very light feel. Jelly dough is an excellent choice for softening and exfoliating the skin, as it has a slight stickiness that helps to draw out impurities and draw out pores. Sponges made from natural materials such as apricot or almond butter provide a gentle but effective cleaning action.
There are two types of face mask – one to clean and treat the skin, and one to hydrate and restore skin tone. Cleansing masks clean the face without removing natural oils. Hydrating masks restore facial smoothness and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Both can be used on their own, or combined with other organic ingredients. For best results, use all-natural face masks with vitamin C.
Face masks may contain ingredients such as kaolin, bentone gel and avocado oil, which are effective in removing grime and excess oil without damaging the skin. Other beneficial ingredients may include licorice extract, which helps to exfoliate the skin, as well as extracts from kelp and seaweed. For extra softening power, witch hazel may be added. Eye and mouth masks may contain components that help to keep pours from running into the eyes.
In addition to selecting a cleansing mask, a toner, cleanser and moisturizer are needed to maintain proper face masks. It’s important to use all of these products at least once a week, to prevent excessive dryness or rashes. Face cloth face coverings are an excellent choice for women who are allergic to typical products. Cotton cloth face covering is the best option for most women, especially if the woman is prone to allergies.
