A surgical face mask, sometimes called a nasal mask, is designed to be worn by medical personnel during surgical procedures. Surgical masks are designed to prevent infections in surgical patients and preserving medical staff by capturing airborne bacteria and liquid droplets from the mouth and nose of the wearer. Face masks are also used to reduce discomfort and making breathing more comfortable for those assisting in surgery or cleaning before surgical procedures. In addition, facial masks provide the option for a more even skin application to reduce skin abrasion and increase facial skin-to-skin contact.
Nasal and facial masks can be worn either over the nose or under the chin. Typically, these devices are worn by nurses or other medical personnel in high-risk job environments where they must maintain tight enclosed masks during procedures. These devices are available with a variety of different features and should be selected based on the tasks and procedures to which they will be used. In addition, the type and location of exhalation valves should be selected based on the needs of the patient.
While all medical face masks have various uses, specific types of masks have different applications in different situations. For example, a high-quality full face mask made of a thick vinyl material is best for preventing infection and keeping the nasal passageway clear of particles and debris. In addition, this type of mask is often worn to prevent or limit the severity of allergic reactions to certain medications, to decrease the risks of facial infections, or to aid in the identification and clearing of sinuses or allergies.
Another type of face mask is called a covid-19. This product is similar to a nasal steroid or vapor barrier, designed to protect the nose, throat, and mouth from potentially harmful infectious materials. A thick layer of the product is placed over the nose, to provide protection for the nose, and then additional layers are added around the mouth and chin. A disposable plastic guard can be used to prevent a tear or leak from occurring. These products should only be worn under expert medical supervision and under close medical monitoring when outside of the sterile environment of a doctor’s office.
A third type of face mask that is frequently worn is a nose clip, which attaches to the face mask directly. A soft, flexible band is inserted into the mouth and pulled up slightly to push the clip through the nostrils, holding them open. The nose clips are often used by asthmatic patients and can be worn with a variety of different facial makeup and hair styles. If a patient requires a specific length of nose clip or needs to wear a different style of clip, they should ask their physician before beginning any care regimen. Although these products are often worn for decorative purposes, some patients may experience skin irritation or discomfort while wearing them.
When a patient begins to wear a new face mask, it is especially important to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. For example, it is important to wait at least 24 hours before and after using the product. It is also important to wash the hands thoroughly after application and to use hand creams, such as calamine lotion, to minimize the spread of the disease. Patients should avoid kissing others, using telephones or other devices that require direct contact with the face and should avoid breathing in the same air as the patient or others who may have the illness. Patients should wear sunglasses, gloves and appropriate face masks at all times to avoid spreading this highly contagious virus.
