Medical Applications of a Face Mask
A surgical face mask, more commonly known as an masksaver or surgical face mask is designed to be worn by healthcare professionals during various medical procedures to avoid airborne transmission of infections from the patient and/or the treating physician. The infection could spread through the breathing airway if not properly maintained by these healthcare workers. These medical staff members are required to wear surgical masks for safety purposes as well. These masks are used to cover the nose, mouth and eyes of the medical staff members and patients alike. There are certain things that need to be considered before buying a surgical mask and one of the major considerations is the cost of these medical equipments.
Face masks are generally divided into three categories: disposable, laminate and traditional. Disposable face masks are made up of paper, which is moistened with sterile solution and is removed from the face for regular cleaning. Laminate face masks are comprised of plastic strips or sheets that are used once and can be reused for another patient. The most common materials used for these medical devices are vinyl coated polypropylene, neoprene, ethyl vinyl chloride and polypropylene.
It has been found that medical staff members are more sensitive to infections when in environments with higher levels of humidity. Therefore, it has been recommended that healthcare professionals are trained and regularly wore masks when in dry, hot, humid or windy areas. However, there are different indications when wearing masks such as for breathing. Below are the different indications when wearing masks for breathing.
When the air cannot get in through the nose and mouth due to a blocked nose, a face mask is used to keep the air flowing smoothly. For people who have a unique nose structure where there are multiple layers where the air travels in different directions, there are multiple layers in order to achieve the best airflow without any blockage. A good example would be a person who has a thin nose with three to four distinct layers. If all the layers are not even, it can be very difficult for the person to breathe and lead to difficulties with a cold.
In addition to breathing difficulties, a person with a thick nasal discharge may also benefit from using a face mask to reduce the amount of discharge that comes out. The discharge comes from the nasal and sinus cavities. It has been found that some people with this condition have excess mucus and therefore find it difficult to clean it without the use of a nose spray or irrigation tool. There are different tools available to clean the mucous and ensure that the nasal passages are open for better airflow. Face masks usually have a number of washable loops and straps that can be washed or replaced easily.
There are also other medical applications for face masks such as to wash them or clean them. The use of a face mask to clean the nose is often seen in hospitals where patients often need to stay awake for a long time. Using a face mask to wash the sinuses is also seen frequently in hospitals. This is because the patient cannot stand for long periods of time while in the hospital. Other medical uses are to wash the openings of the ear or nose to ensure that there are no infections present.
