Medical Masks – A Short Guide

A surgical face mask, sometimes called a full-face mask, is designed to be worn by medical professionals during medical procedures. Surgeons wear these face masks when performing major surgical procedures to protect their face and neck during surgery. They also are used to prevent infection in surgical patients and saving staff by preserving the freshness of patients and by preventing the spread of infection from one patient to another. Face masks have various types. The type of mask, a surgeon will wear depends on his/her level of infection control and surgical procedure.

Face Mask

One type of surgical mask is disposable masks. These are made of plastic but can also be made of latex. Disposable medical masks come in two major varieties, namely, rigid and soft. Rigid disposable masks are usually made from silicon rubber, while soft disposable masks are usually made from neoprene. Both types have the same function: to keep the patient’s nose clean and prevent secretions from entering the nose and mouth.

Another type of surgical mask is respiratory protective masks. This is made of clear plastic with an inner liner made of silicone that prevents the transmission of airborne contaminants. Breathing masks come in different types. The most popular ones are the full face and the slip-on breathing masks. The outer breathing mask is composed of a chin guard and a nose bridge. The inner breathing-buffoon has a mouthpiece and a chin cup.

Foam face shields are made from either polystyrene or expanded polystyrene. These materials are used to form breathing and non-breathing masks. There are many types of foam face shields. These include nasal and full face shields, protective shields for the cheek, nose, chin, and jaw, and throat and mouthpieces.

There are also disposable face shields available in the market today. These disposable masks are made from either plastic or silicone rubber. Disposable face shields are perfect for patients who do not require a face shield that would remain on all the time. Face shields that remain on the face for the whole day might become inconvenient. The best thing about disposable face shields is that they can be easily washed in water.

The various types of medical masks may vary depending on the type of job you have. For example, a patient undergoing chemotherapy will need a different kind of mask than the one a patient suffering from colds will require. While one kind of mask may be appropriate for protecting your nose, the other may be better suited for protecting your lips. The only way to find out what kind of mask is best for you is to consult a doctor.
