Surgical and Non-Surgical Face Masks

A face mask, also called a surgical mask, is meant to be worn by medical practitioners during medical procedures. It’s designed to prevent infection in patients, treating staff and patients, and removing bacteria shed from the nose and mouth of the wearer. This type of face mask is typically used during surgeries. It’s also frequently used in an emergency room setting or even as an over-the-counter face mask during a cold.

Surgical masks are also known by other names such as “surgical face masks” (SMMs) and “semi-slit surgical masks” (SMS). While they can be worn for surgery, this kind of face mask is generally used for external use. These are often made of thick plastic and are usually worn while patients are awake and alert. The mask is usually placed over the patient’s nose, cheeks and mouth before covering the eyes. During anesthesia, a local anesthetic will be applied to the face mask and then the patient will be given a general anesthesia.

A nose ring is another type of face mask commonly worn in clinics and hospitals. A nose ring can either be secured on top of a nose bridge or can be attached to the nose. This type of face mask is commonly used in combination with a nasal strip. A nasal strip is used during surgery or emergency medicine to control fluid loss from the sinuses.

Surgical face masks can be made from a variety of materials. Some of the most common materials include vinyl, polyurethane and polyethylene. Vinyl is very durable and will not easily break. Polyurethane and polyethylene are less durable but are more resistant to breaking. Polyurethane is very smooth and does not easily break when exposed to the air. Polyethylene is the most common material for plastic surgical face masks. A great benefit of plastic surgical masks is that it has a matte finish which makes the mask much more comfortable to wear.

Surgical face masks can also have small openings, called perimeters, where droppings can go out of the face or nose. These openings are designed to catch the droppings that will be shed from the nose or mouth of the patient. One can easily wipe away droppings from the nose with the help of the nose ring. A polyurethane or silicone nose ring may be used to make sure that all droppings are caught in the plastic.

When using a face mask at home, one should wash their hands after each use and dry the face mask using a towel. The face should be allowed to air dry overnight before putting the mask on again to avoid mold and mildew. Cleaning the nose ring with a lint-free cloth after each use will ensure that the mask remains clean and ready for use.
