A facial mask, also called a face pack or face powder, is a thick powder applied to the face, usually over the nose and cheeks, to facilitate the breathing process. For example, some of the newer varieties of face masks include a special chemical agent that helps to combat the development of the bacteria that causes the common cold. Other types of technologies also include technologies that encourage the patient to drink more water or eat more fruits and vegetables. If a patient feels better and is less likely to develop a cold in the first place, he or she might be encouraged to drink more water or eat more fruits and vegetables instead of staying away from these items and/or putting on a cold compress.

Modern face masks also come in a variety of different styles. Some are thick, some are tapered, and some are designed to be worn while sleeping. Some are used to moisturize the skin, some to remove excess oil from the skin, and some contain added nutritive agents to aid in the overall health of the skin. The exact formula that is used to deliver the specific benefits to each patient will vary, as well.

A key element of face mask technology is the fabric that is used to cover the face. Face masks should always have a barrier, whether it is a barrier that can block the entry of air or a barrier that can prevent the absorption of water. The barrier can either be a fabric like GoreTex or another similar fabric, or it can be some type of thermoplastic material that allows the face mask to be shaped into any desired form. Face masks should always be made with fabric that is breathable so that as little moisture as possible escapes into the wearer’s skin.
