A face mask, which is also called a nasal mask, is used by medical professionals during surgical procedures to protect the nose and mouth from infection. It’s designed to stop infections in surgical personnel and patients by capturing bacteria that are shed from the patient’s mouth and nose and preventing the spread of viruses.
Face masks are designed for one purpose – to keep the nasal passages clear of mucus. The mucus is a sign of infection but without it you can’t breathe. Some of the common reasons that surgical personnel wear face masks include postoperative infection (such as from chemotherapy and radiation treatment), an allergic reaction, a blocked nose, or anesthetic complications.
There are many types of face masks. They come in many forms including disposable plastic facemasks, adhesive strips, foam masks, and full-face masks. All have advantages and disadvantages. The disposable plastic face masks are the easiest to use and they don’t absorb or retain the germs that may be on the patient’s face. But, these masks can become uncomfortable and they often don’t fit tightly enough to prevent leakage of the mouth and nose and they don’t fit securely over the nostrils or the nose hole.
Another type of face mask is the adhesive strips. They’re reusable and they work well. However, they can leak. Foam masks are more expensive than other types of face masks but they provide a very comfortable seal. They may need to be replaced frequently because the foam can wear off, allowing moisture to enter the airways. If they’re not used properly, they can lead to sagging skin around the eyes, nose and mouth.
The full-face mask is made to cover the nose, mouth and nasal passage. It has an opening at the base where the nose and mouth are connected so that the patient can breath. If the patient is not breathing well or doesn’t want to wear a mask, he or she can remove the nasal obstruction with a chin strap, usually attached to the mask. A full-face mask is very secure and provides adequate protection against infections, sinus and mouth infections.
Surgical masks aren’t cheap, but they are necessary for those who are undergoing surgery. A face mask can prevent infection, minimize the risks of infection, and stop other diseases from spreading and reduce the risks of complications after surgery.
Latex, or polyurethane, is another material that has become popular for face masks. Latex is strong and flexible and it holds onto the skin better than many other materials and it’s resistant to bacteria and dust mites, which can cause infections.
