A face mask, also called a facial cleanser, is a thick, closed mask worn around the nose and mouth, designed to remove and prevent dirt and oil from entering the pores of the skin. A properly worn facial mask can be an effective way to cleanse the skin without irritating the skin or cutting the skin. Facial cleansers are also used to alleviate the symptoms of acne, blackheads, pimples, whiteheads, and zits. While effective cleansers are usually not readily available, if facial distancing is impossible and when visiting a dermatologist is simply impossible, a cloth face mask may be a better alternative than nothing at all. A cloth face mask can be made from a wide variety of fabrics, including polyester blends, natural fibers, or even silk. These are usually inexpensive and easy to make.
Some individuals are embarrassed by the idea of wearing a face mask, but if worn and used properly, a pre-symptomatic cleaning can remove the bacteria, dirt, oils, and other impurities that build up in our pores only on occasion. When these are present, they may cause inflammation and irritation, resulting in unsightly blemishes. This type of occurrence can actually prevent individuals from wearing facial cleansers, as blemishes on the face and neck may signal acne, which requires a visit to the doctor to obtain treatment. If this is the case, then using a homemade mask can be a better solution than going without.
To make a cloth mask, begin by laying a clean towel or washcloth out onto a clean surface, such as the counter top or floor. With the face mask facing out towards the customer, gather a large number of smaller pieces or strips of fabric, each no more than a quarter-inch in width. Begin by placing a small amount of fabric in each individual hole, such as around the ears or mouth, to ensure that it does not cover any of the skin. Add another small layer of fabric to this in the same area, making sure that there is plenty of space for the cloth to be wrung between the layers. Repeat this process until all of the fabric layers are in place.
To create a custom fit mask, adjust the length by at least one inch on each side and about half an inch across from the temple to the corner of the eyes. If possible, use washcloths with non-slip fibers. To test whether or not the mask fits properly, hold it up to your face without removing it. The last step is to wring the excess fabric to minimize wrinkles.
One of the easiest masks to make is a long nose or beard cutout. Begin by lining the opening with a piece of double-sided tape to hold it in place. Next, sew the two edges together to make a square base for the beard. A straight edge can be used to trim the beard into a proper shape. Fold the piece of masking tape along the base of the beard to make a clean line and trim it to fit snugly around the face.
Custom fit masks help protect against flying debris, sweat and spit up, which can easily happen when you get out of the shower and have large droplets fall onto your face. Masks also help prevent dust from getting into the nose, which can cause irritation and discomfort. Another advantage of using custom-fitted masks is that they can be worn at any time, not just when having a shower or while doing the dishes. They can be worn during sports activities and in general whenever there are large amounts of moisture on the skin.
