Use of Face Masks

A surgical face mask, sometimes called an endoscopic surgical mask, is designed to be worn by healthcare professionals during surgery. Endoscopic surgical masks are designed to prevent infections from spreading in the operating room and treating staff and patients by capturing infectious particles and fluid droplets from the nose and mouth of the wearer. A surgical face mask consists of a tight-fitting cover over a surgical mask.

The cover over the mask is called a face shield or face guard. Surgical or endoscopic face masks may be prescribed by doctors or nurses to their patients. It is recommended that a patient wear a surgical mask when he or she has rhinoplasty (nose surgery) performed. Patients should ask their surgeon that kind of mask they will need to wear during their procedure. Some surgeons recommend using nose studs or nose clips instead. However, if a nasal trimming clip is used it must be securely fastened to the face mask.

The reasons for the recommendation of a mask and face coverings are many. Infections that occur in the operating room are often difficult to detect and can spread rapidly throughout the office if they are not treated quickly. If a doctor neglects to remove a nasal drip he or she can create the potential for serious damage to an airtight mask. In addition, prolonged exposure to a contaminated area can irritate and sensitize the skin of the wearer.

A surgical face mask is designed to provide a high level of protection against infection. The fabric used to make the face mask should be sterile. Sterile fabric will allow doctors to examine the inside of the mask for signs of infection. A medical professional will wear disposable face masks while they perform other duties at the office or in other locations. They may also be required to wear a face mask while handling patients, while operating medical equipment, or when other, more sensitive facial skin is being examined.

The face mask should have two layers of fabric. One layer is for the face mask itself and the second layer is for the nose pads. The purpose of the second layer is to trap any stray nose hairs that might get trapped in the first layer. The goal is to have a smooth surface and closed pores for the surgeon’s hands. However, sometimes a surgeon finds that he or she needs more than one layer of fabric on the nose pads. In this case, the face mask usually comes with additional padding.
