A face mask, also called a facemask, is a cosmetic mask used over the nose and cheeks, usually made of synthetic cloth or thread, most often cotton. Facemasks can be used for serious acne or wrinkle treatment or for just clearing out the pores and oil glands. While face masks made from synthetic cloth are often used on athletes or people with very oily skin, there are natural facemasks available that are made from natural fibers like cotton or hemp. Natural cloth face masks are great for those who want to try facemasks for the first time without too much concern or expense. Synthetic cloth face masks can be used by individuals who have acne or sensitive skin; however, natural facemasks may not be as effective because they contain certain chemicals that irritate the skin.
Facemasks come in two different types, one being a disposable plastic type and the other being a surgical mask. A plastic-type face mask can be sterilized by the use of hot water and then rinsed, or they can be put in the microwave for a short period of time before being disposed of. However, if small particles are present in the sterilized product, these particles can become lodged in tiny holes in the plastic which can cause the plastic to break down and leak. If small particles are present in the surgical masks, the tiny holes would not be large enough to allow air to go through, which would result in the mask becoming ineffectual.
There is no shortage of pandemic viruses and bacteria that are present in the air. Airborne pathogens like coughs, sneezes, colds and the flu can easily become airborne and be inhaled by susceptible persons. These airborne pathogens can then enter the lungs and cause infections and irritation to the respiratory tract. The best way to prevent this from happening is to wear a face mask whenever possible, especially during seasons where the air is particularly foul.
Most face masks work effectively in preventing these airborne particles from entering the lungs but do little to help keep the air clean. As a result, people still breathe in particles that enter their body via breathing. To solve this problem, face masks work by keeping dust and soil out of the mask wearer’s nose and mouth. When the nose is clogged with mucus or dirt, it causes discomfort and an unpleasant odor to emanate from the wearer, which is oftentimes a trigger for the onset of a cold.
Because face masks cannot be washed like regular facial cloths, they are better used during the cold seasons, as dust and dirt are commonly associated with the dry winter weather. The fabrics used to make face masks come in a variety of materials including, but not limited to: polyester, nylon, spandex, cotton fabrics and breathable non-woven cotton fabrics. While polyester and nylon are great choices for everyday use, cotton fabrics are better for situations where more sweat is required and can help keep the user from feeling too warm while still maintaining a comfortable temperature inside. Breathable non-woven fabric varieties are perfect for the rainy and summer seasons.
Like any other type of facial cloth, a face mask can also help prevent headaches. Since the mask keeps nasal cavities clear of bacteria, it can help to eliminate headaches, sinusitis and other nasal congestion issues. As with all medical products, the use of these masks should always be recommended to those who require them. While there are a variety of different types available, face masks have been shown to be very effective in combating colds and flu symptoms.
