Using Cotton and Fiber Face Masks

A surgical face mask, sometimes called a medical face mask, is designed to be worn by medical health professionals during medical procedures. Surgical masks are designed to prevent infections in operating patients and saving staff by preventing the spread of bacteria by capturing airborne particles and droplets from the nose and mouth of the wearer. They are made from a variety of materials including but not limited to plastic composites, neoprene, silicone, polystyrene and carbon fiber. They are also manufactured in numerous different sizes, usually measured in cubic centimeters, to meet the varying needs of different medical facilities.

There are many different styles and brands available in face masks that can be used for different applications. These include; surgical face masks that are used during open surgery such as cleft lip or cleft palate surgery, and closed face masks that are only used during certain surgical procedures. In addition to being used during surgery they are sometimes worn to protect the nasal passages in order to prevent infection. Many times when they are used to prevent bacteria growth they are referred to as nasal breathing masks as well. In addition to being worn during surgical procedures they are also frequently worn as a general head cover over a hospital uniform to protect the entire head.

The most common indications that are given to justify the need to wear masks as part of a surgical procedure is when a patient is allergic to one or more substances that are contained in the surgical garment. Most often this is the result of cross contamination between different pieces of equipment used during a procedure. When a person has an allergic reaction it could be from a number of sources including; contact with a piece that had been used on another person that was also contaminated. Another indication that face masks can be required is when a patient has an extremely high level of exposure to airborne irritants such as; cigarette smoke, dust or chemical fumes from a manufacturing facility. Another indication that you may require wearing masks is if you have a cold or respiratory illness that causes congestion in the throat.

The use of face masks in healthcare settings is only a reasonable option for these particular indications because the amount of time that is available to wear such a device minimizes the amount of discomfort that is experienced by the wearer. There are other reasons that are not often considered when it comes to wearing surgical masks in healthcare settings, and these include; an inability to breathe normally due to blockage in the nasal passageway. Some individuals who suffer from post nasal drip also wear nasal plugs in order to open the passage so that they can breathe normally again.

If a person in your care requires medical attention in a hospital setting, there are several ways to identify whether the requirement for a face mask is warranted. You can ask the attending physician to evaluate the airway clearness of the patient. Another indication that a face mask is required is when a person in your care has a cough or any type of lung infection. The reason for this is that these infections can be very contagious and affect the health of the individual if they are not treated in a timely manner. The same applies to persons who have any type of sore throat or colds, since these ailments can also lead to a build up of mucus in the nose and throat which can prevent proper air flow.

When examining patients with these indications it is important to ask them to remove their masks if they have difficulty breathing and then re-apply the face mask after at least 10 minutes have passed. In some situations where there is significant laryngitis patients may experience problems removing the cloth face mask. This is due to the fact that many individuals are unable to breathe through the mouth and have difficulties removing the cloth face mask. Some individuals will have success with using scissors or other utensils to pull off the cloth face mask and then applying soothing gels or creams in order to breathe normally again. These individuals should never rely on traditional methods of removing their face masks because the length of time that the individual will have to suffer from this aggravation is significantly longer than the amount of time that it takes for traditional methods to take effect.
