Anesthetic masks, also referred to as an air-purifying mask, is designed to be worn by healthcare workers during certain medical procedures in order to prevent the transmission of infectious infections from patient to patient and the administering of medications in treating patients. These masks are specifically designed to filter out dust, air, and other impurities that may prove harmful to health. Airborne pathogens, such as viruses, could easily enter the patient’s air stream if the air flow is not properly regulated. These harmful particles can create a lot of problems, making it difficult for the patient to breath, which may cause further complications or death in extreme situations.
An air-purifying face mask has two filters: one inside the cloth mask and another in the face mask. The innermost filter has a charcoal and sand design to trap dust, while the latter functions to clean the air and eliminate possible bacteria and allergens in the air. The two types of cloth masks that come in different sizes, shape, and color are preferred by healthcare workers. A large face mask, which covers the entire face, may be required by a healthcare worker who works with patients in intensive care units and other such areas where patients may be seriously ill or injured.
Different kinds of face masks have different designs. The most common of these is the open-face kind that looks like an ordinary nose piece. The design of these is often comprised of a small clear plastic opening on one side and a plastic mouth piece on the other. This enables easy cleaning of the nasal passageway as well as filtering of unwanted secretions and debris. A wide-faced unit is another kind that has a tiny hole on its top and a collapsible mouth piece in its lower part.
An alternative to using cloth face masks is the use of disposable gear. Such items are highly efficient and inexpensive alternatives for those hospitals that cannot afford to use expensive medical solutions. One such example is the disposable face mask. Like a disposable plastic bag, this type consists of a liner that is affixed to the face so that it cannot move about. A cloth material covers the lower part of the unit and has several air hoses that can be attached to a chest wall for attachment onto a patient’s skin. These face masks are ideal for use during flu seasons, when infections are more prevalent.
However, face masks have been found to cause some unwanted side effects, especially during seasons when the virus spreads at a rapid pace. In such situations, some healthcare workers choose to use air purifiers instead of using cloth masks. Air purifiers are special purifiers that filter impurities from the air and help eliminate the threat posed by respiratory virus like coughs and colds. Unlike face masks that can cover the entire face, air purifiers can only suppress the respiratory virus on the nose, cheeks, and forehead.
Aside from the fact that they are not 100% effective in terms of containing the airborne virus, another drawback of using face masks is the possibility of trapping the virus in the nose. This could result in serious health hazards, especially in situations where the worker is coughing or sneezing heavily. The simple solution to this problem is to use a nose net, which can be obtained from many healthcare centers. These are small, clear netting with yellow or blue strips imprinted on them. Used in conjunction with a face mask, the nose net offers excellent protection against the airborne infection.
