A surgical face mask, also called a facial skin mask, is designed to be worn by medical professionals during medical procedures. Surgical masks are designed to prevent infections from patients and saving staff by trapping bacteria in aerosol droplets and liquid droplets on the face of the wearer, and shed by the mouth and nose of patients. The risks of infection include fever, vomiting, nausea and blood clots.
A surgical face mask will be placed over the face and will cover most or all of the nose, mouth, and chin areas. The purpose of the mask is to prevent contamination by any airborne pathogens that may be airborne when a patient is receiving medical care. The surgical mask will prevent the spread of infection by inducing a state of tight air tightness around the face and nose of the wearer. The tightness of the air seal ensures that there will be little or no movement of the patient while wearing the mask.
It is not uncommon for doctors and nurses to ask their patients to remove or wear face masks during some routine procedure. Surgical nurses in high-end emergency care facilities often request that their patients not to wear face masks during their care. In a recent study completed by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, it was determined that pandemic flu had become more easily spread in hospitals due to nurses not wearing surgical masks. According to the study, about two-thirds of the pandemic flu strains had been identified within hospitals within three days of being introduced.
Face masks may contain a variety of chemicals, each designed to target a particular cause of infection. Some face masks may contain an antimicrobial agent that kills or reduces the ability of Staphylococcus aureus to adhere to the skin. Other agents may reduce the ability of fungi such as mold and yeast to grow on the patient’s skin. Other chemicals in face masks may act as a vasoconstrictor, preventing excessive amount of moisture from escaping from the skin. These agents may also help to moisturize dry or chapped skin types.
It is very important that healthcare workers who wear face masks understand the dangers of not wearing them. A face mask should always be worn at all times when it is not necessary to breathe. Healthcare workers who fail to comply with this important safety requirement may spread the infection they are trying to prevent by opening their nasal passages. If a worker who does not wear a mask is in a situation where air cannot get past his or her nose, the patient could become very ill and even die if the spread of the infection is not stopped.
There are three types of face masks which work differently than one another. The most commonly used face masks are the soft contact, the air wedge, and the nose and throat sprays. However, some doctors feel that these masks are no longer necessary because newer technology has been developed for the sole purpose of drying. Masks that are made from silicon are the most advanced technology and offer more air flow than the older versions. Although, one still must have the proper equipment to perform all of the functions of the face mask such as the use of the exhalation valves and the intake and exhalation ports.
