What You Should Know About a Face Mask
A medical face mask, sometimes called a full face mask or a postoperative mask, is designed specifically for healthcare professionals during surgical procedures. It is meant to stop infections in personnel and patients by catching bacteria and shedding it from the patient’s mouth and nose, respectively. It also offers an improved patient experience that includes an improved sense of safety.
Face masks are typically worn while operating on patients. They are made of either a rigid plastic face shield or a soft and flexible mask made of mesh. In a rigid mask, a wire frame is stretched across the face and on the top of the head, a chin strap is placed around the head. On a flexible face mask, the mask is made with a series of loops on either side of the face.
The face mask serves two purposes: it restricts the amount of air that is inhaled by restricting the amount of skin air that can enter the nostrils and the nose, and it prevents the skin from being punctured by foreign bodies. When a surgeon opens the nasal and oral cavities, for example, he or she places pressure on the nasal bones using the nose mask. This forces the air through the nasal passages until it reaches the mouth. After the air passes through the mouth, the mask is opened to allow the air to exit through the nose and into the lungs.
A face mask is also used to prevent infection in medical workers needling their wounds. During wound care, the face shield prevents contamination and prevents infection by limiting the amount of infected fluid transfer into the wound. It also helps to limit the spread of bacteria by preventing mucus from accumulating around the wound and the source of the wound. Wound care specialists wear face masks while cleaning the wounds and when conducting surgery, particularly during open wounds.
Postoperative masks are used to protect the face from postoperative pain and discomfort. While in a hospital, doctors may apply anesthetic or pain medications to patients who cannot respond to anesthesia or who have a difficult time breathing after a surgical procedure. During postoperative surgery, doctors must be able to clear their airway, which includes not only breathing through the mouth but also through the nose and eyes. Postoperative pain usually makes it difficult for patients to breathe without help. Some people use nasal drops that dilate the airway to help them breathe and others may need to have a ventilator installed in their beds in order to help them breathe.
A face mask worn in the operating room is also used to treat postoperative infections. In addition to preventing infection, it provides protection against radiation exposure and reduces irritation of the face and the skin by protecting the patients’ delicate skin from burns, chemical irritants, etc. A face shield is a good protection against radiation, because it limits the amount of skin that can be affected by radiation.
